James couldn't hear any odd noises, apart from those of the creaking floor, and he was only slightly relieved. He slowly made his was to the end of the hall. He didn't know where he was going, he just knew that this was the hallway he seen Lily go down.
He grew closer to a door that was left slightly ajar, hopping that Lily was in their alone.
James new that if he would open that door and see Lily with someone else it would break his heart in two, he loved her more than life its self, ever since he first meet her on the train to Hogwarts his first year.
He loved her more than Romeo loved Juliet, more than Noah love Allie, more than Kong loved Ann. Life would have no meaning if he lost her.
The door at the end of the hallway swung open, and a disheveled looking Lily walked through. Her hair was tousled and her face was red.
As soon as she saw James she froze. Her eyes meet his, which were now riming with tears (although he did try to hide them), and she instantly felt horrible. Her heart sunk and her stomach felt queasy, she had completely forgotten about James.
"James, Let me explain."
James looked away from her, his tears hidden behind his hand.
"No, No. There is nothing to explain." His voice caught. "I hope you'll be happy."
Then James turned around and ran down the hall.
Lily, though, stood shock in her spot, staring at the place James had just been standing. She noticed James had been thoroughly upset, and never realized until now that maybe James really does like her.
This thought made her heart flip, but she didn't understand why. All her Hogwart's years and she never felt anything toward James, or maybe she did but every time she would she'd ignore it.
Until now Lily never let herself feel the emotions she had toward James. And until now she never knew that she really did like James.
"James!" She called out. She really wished now that she had watched which way he had gone.
She ran down the hall after him, it was well after dark, the lanterns had been blow out, and Lily could barely see where her feet landed.
As Lily ran she thought of all the possible places James might have ran to. One stood out most among the others.
Lily ran as fast as she could, she knew James, and knew that if in the right mood he WILL do something stupid.
Lily ran toward the front hall, out the doors and toward the Quidditch pitch.
She saw him flying fast and recklessly in the air.
"JAMES!!!" she screamed.
He barely looked her way and kept flying.
"James!!!" She screamed again. She knew he could hear her. "James, come down here please!"
"Why? So you can stomp on my broken heart?" He yelled back at her.
"No James. Just please come down."
Despite his broken heart, James did fly down to meet her in the center of the quidditch pitch.
"What do you want?" He asked not looking directly at her.
"I want to talk to you about-"
"About what, Lily?"
"About--About us!" She raised her voice.
"What about us Lily? There is no us, not after what just happened."
"What did just happen, James? Did you actually see what had gone on? It wasn't what you think-"
"Then what was it Lily? I saw how you looked after you left. What were you doing with him?"
"I-I, I wasn't doing that!"
It fell quiet. The only noise was from the creatures in the Forbidden forest.
"James I-"
"No Lily. Since the first day of school I have loved you. As much as I tried you would never give me a chance, but when this new guy comes to school your out snogging him his first night here. How do you think that makes me feel?"
"James I'm sorry. I really am. But not everything is about you, and if I want to go snogging someone in the middle of the night I will." Lily started getting angry. "You're so arrogant and selfish it makes me sick. Maybe I don't want to be with someone who acts like that. I know you can be better, James, but you need to grow up first."
James was taken aback by this. His mouth was open and he stood staring at Lily.
"Lily, I was just acting like that to get your attention. I love you Lily but you will never give me the time of day."
"James. I, I don't know what to tell you."
"Tell me you love me."
"But I don't think I do-"
"Then lie."
"I can't do that to you James."
"It would be better than telling the truth. I wouldn't hurt as bad."
"Yes it would."
"No, it wouldn't!"
"James! Stop being a child! Yes it would!"
"I'm not being a child, Lily! I-I just can't meet your standards. I can't be perfect."
"I'm not asking you to be perfect. I'm asking you to grow up." Lily sighed with frustration. Her voice had now gone to a whisper. She took a step toward James. "I'm asking you to be strong when I need you." She took another step toward him; he took a step toward her. "I'm asking you to be there for me." Another step. "I can't have a child guarding my heart, I need a man."
They took that last step toward each other. Only a few inches separated them.
James took Lily's hand in his. "I can grow up. I can be strong. I can be there for you. I can be a man. I love you Lily Evans. I Love You!"
"I know." Lily stated simply.
